What is a LED Light Pipe?
Light pipes, often called LED light pipes because of their use with LEDs, are physical structures (either a transparent plastic rod or an optical fiber) that are used for transmitting light lengthwise. Integrating LED light pipes is an extremely cost effective option that helps eliminate the multiple steps associated with transporting light from one location to another. Light pipes transmit up to 80% of emitted light making them useful for a broad range of applications including security equipment, medical devices, and communications equipment.

Introducing bisco’s New Blog Series – What is it Wednesday?
Modern procurement teams often purchase items based only on a product number and a short description. Product expertise is left to engineers allowing buyers to focus on obtaining cost savings and ensuring on time delivery. Despite the benefits of specialization, processing basic product knowledge can often be useful for purchasers. In particular, product expertise is helpful when related products are required or when alternate products are provided. Although a buyer may not make the final decision about purchasing associated items or accepting alternates, product knowledge can help them make an informed decision about escalating to an engineer or supply chain manager.
In an effort to provide purchasing teams with foundational product information, bisco industries is launching a blog series called What is it Wednesday. Each Wednesday we will offer insight on common electronic components and hardware by providing product descriptions, common applications, and top manufacturers. To receive updates on the What is it Wednesday blog series and other news from bisco industries be sure to subscribe to our blog.

Counterfeit Parts Still An Issue For Military Equipment
In 2012 the Senate Armed Services Committee of the United States released a report identifying a massive number of imported counterfeit Chinese electronic parts being used in U.S. military equipment.
According to the report, more than 70% of an estimated one million suspected counterfeit parts were imported from China. The second and third largest sources for fake parts were the United Kingdom and Canada. The report also highlighted that counterfeit parts were found in helicopters and planes used by the United States Navy.
Some three years after the report, combatting counterfeit parts continue to be a significant focus for the defense and aerospace industry. Supply chain members are focusing on maintaining and improving product traceability in addition to cutting out unknown and unreliable suppliers. The failure of a single electronic part in any military vehicles could not only result in higher overall costs, but also cause injuries, mission failure, reduced dependability and product recall. Most importantly for the manufacturing community, it could result in the loss of contracts, and the shutdown of manufacturing lines.
