The Technology Behind Your Daily Weather Forecast

The weather affects people significantly and in many instances, different weather conditions have a bearing on our day-to-day plans. Weather can impact people’s moods and even their overall health. Millions of people depend on daily weather reports and adjust their daily routines accordingly.

One of the main instruments used by meteorologists to forecast the weather is the barometer. Barometers’ measure the continually changing pressure in our atmosphere and helps us predict upcoming weather conditions.

History of the Barometer

The aneroid barometer patented in 1843 by French scientist, Lucien Vidie, utilizes a sealed flexible container to measure pressure. This tool, which was similar to an accordion, expanded or contracted depending on ambient pressures.

The barometer grew in popularity among meteorologists as they noted the correlation between atmospheric pressure and the weather. When used with a thermometer, barometers assist in creating weather predictions based on following patterns of high and low pressure systems. Barometric readings can indicate clear skies, high winds, snow, rainstorms, or sunny weather. Meteorologists compare the relative pressure changes in different areas, and make predictions using that information.

Modern Barometers

Today meteorologists rely on digital barometers. The concept is similar to that of earlier models, but digital barometers have electronic sensors to measure both pressure and altitude. These devices contain analog-to-digital converters, and their findings are shown on a digital display. Digital barometers can also be set to automatically record wind chill, the rate of barometric changes, and even temperatures. In order to collect and display such detailed weather information, modern barometers depend on components from Keystone Electronics. Keystone’s diverse product catalog includes fuse clips, fuse holders, battery clips, contacts, screws, panel hardware, mounting brackets, spacers, standoffs, plugs, pins and more.

PCB Industry Growth Below Projections but Still Strong

A 2013 report from Research and Markets forecasted that the global printed circuit board (PCB) industry would reach an estimated $93.9 billion by 2017. In addition, the report projected that the compound annual growth rate (CAGR) would average 8.1% during 2012-2017. Research and Markets’ report, titled “Global Printed Circuit Board Industry 2012-2017: Trends, Profits and Forecast Analysis” also stated that the Asia Pacific region is slated to be the industry leader in growth. This growth is predicted to be driven by the increasing demand for high-end products from customers in both China and India.

Three years since the initial publication of Research and Markets’ report the PCB industry has seen numerous challenges in meeting such lofty growth projections.  A number of factors have affected PCB industry growth, including the rising cost of copper, the appreciation of Chinese currency, and the ongoing pressure to produce innovative products with more compatibility and greater performance. Despite these challenges the PCB industry grew to $59.6 billion in 2014, a 3.7% increase compared to 2013 (data from Evertiq). 2015 also promises to be a good year for the global PCB industry as the cost of raw materials drops and strong growth in the mobile device sector drives demand.

Why Drop Shipments Can Save Your Supply Chain

You just got off a conference call with your production team. Somewhere down the line there was a failure to relay a component requirement. Production is already under way and the promised delivery date to your customer is only 6 days out.  It may have been a system error or just human forgetfulness. Either way, you need parts fast!

Sound familiar?

Scenarios like this are when drop ship capabilities become a true asset in a supply partner. A drop shipment is when parts ship directly from the manufacturer to your facility without being warehoused by a distributor. Drop shipments allow you to get your parts faster while still receiving the service and reduced costs of working with a distributor. In some cases a drop shipment can also refer to having allocated stock at a distributor ship directly to a contractor or end customer. In either case drop shipments ensure that parts arrive at the destination as quickly as possible.

Leveraging Drop Shipments

One way to make drop shipments an even more effective tool is to develop strong relationships with distributor partners. When distributors are familiar with your company and its purchasing processes and quality requirements, emergency scenarios like the one above become less stressful. Distributors can then efficiently flow down your requirements and process and track your drop shipment so that you can move on to other tasks.

Another Step Forward for Commercial Drones

In the developing commercial drone industry, San Francisco start-up, Airware, is vying for a crucial role: the operating system. The advantage of a popularized operating system has been seen before in the tech world. Computers took off after MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows appeared.  Similarly the popularity of smartphones rose after the introduction of Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android operating systems. Airware anticipates the same type of success for commercial drones with the release of its Aerial Information Platform operating system.

Early Feedback

After the release of its drone operating system earlier this month it appears Airware may indeed become the Microsoft of drone operating systems. One of Airware’s beta testers, Allied Drones’ president, Josh Kornoff, says he plans to put Airware software on all of the drones they build. According to Kornoff other autopilot solutions he’s tested weren’t up to snuff — only good enough for hobbyists — or were clunky old military systems.

GE Ventures managing director, Alex Tepper, shared a similar sentiment, saying that Airware has found a sweet spot in the market between the hobby systems and the military systems. Airware is partnering with GE to provide commercial drone applications for its customers (GE’s venture arm also made an investment in Airware in late 2014). GE says that the variety of demands it gets from customers, ranging from oil and gas companies to power companies and transportation companies, requires a flexible platform such as Airware’s.

The Future of Commercial Drone Manufacturing

With exciting developments in operating software such as Airware’s Arerial Information Platform, commercial drones are closer than ever to gaining widespread commercial use. As a result commercial drone manufacturing is set to become an increasingly competitive marketplace. To stay ahead of the competition manufacturers must continue to engineer innovative solutions and reduce supply chain costs.
